How to Organize Your Garage for Summer

A great time to organize your garage is right before children get out of school and before the summer activities begin!

Let’s get organized before kids camps, family travels, and summer activities start happening. Many of these activities make us track through the garage and drop certain equipment or other items, creating a bit of a mess. Here are some helpful tips for organizing your garage before a busy summer.

Maximize Vertical Space

You might just think that your garage is too small. This is where our home organizers don’t just think horizontally but also vertically. It is important to use the space practically to gain as much space as possible. For instance, our home organizers might suggest installing racks from the ceiling. This will gain extra space for bins with decorations, bulky items like suitcases, or items that you just do not need regularly. Other helpful tips are mounting racks or hooks on the walls to organize the many activities you have or organizing your yard equipment, like brooms, shovels, edgers, and rakes. Lastly, installing shelving on the floor can help have things together in a designated area and retrieve them when needed.

Make Organization Clear

Now that you have your shelves or racks up, it is time to keep them organized in the best possible way. Our home organizers will suggest getting clear plastic bins with lids where you can label what is in them for easy retrieval of items. These bins can be used for many different things, for instance, kids’ old toys, holiday decorations, travel accessories, or even memorable items. Boxes that are not needed for a long time can be placed further up on the shelves or ceiling racks. Bottom bins should be items that might be needed more often.

Create Functional Garage Spaces

Create a Daily "Drop Zone"

You are almost complete with your garage organization, there is one last tip that can help in everyday life. Creating a “drop zone” close to your garage's entry or exit. This will help you and your family have a designated area to leave dirty shoes, a soccer bag, or any items that are needed to be a quick grab-and-go. This designated spot can be organized and cleaned up when time allows. It is important to remember that garages are heavily used, and clutter will make its way in again. It is key to have a system set up for easy organization when needed.

With these helpful tips, you can create a garage space that works for you. They should help create the space that is needed to bring joy and ease into your and your family’s life. With a little bit of organization and installation, this space should be easy to maintain and create the lifestyle you need throughout the busy day. Our home organizers are always here to help and make this space yours!
